How to Use a Charging Station for Electric Vehicles Tutorial #EVselfie

How can I properly talk about the use of electric vehicles (EV) if I’ve never tried one? Well, I have and driving it was quite enjoyable. You can read my Chevy Volt review here. It’s one thing to have an EV, it’s another to make sure it stays fully charged at home or in a local electric vehicle charging station.

How to Use an EV Charging Station

About those charging stations, we were pretty confused the first time we tried to use it. Here’s a quick tutorial on how to plug-in an EV car.

  1. Tap your NFC-enabled credit card or mobile device to station.
  2. Take out available 220v plug.
  3. Put into car.
  4. Remove when done charging.
  5. Replace plug in station and tap same NFC-enabled credit card or mobile device to end use.

It’s really not that hard but maybe this visual will help:

Some charging stations only come with the 220V car plugs but others have a second compartment with a 120V 3-prong outlet. The charge time is tripled using 120V so I’d suggest waiting for a 220V plug to become available. Oh, and you’ll want to leave that other part alone because it’s temperamental when trying to close it. At our building it’s labeled as ‘1’ and no one uses it…

Looks like a pretty neat car. We live in such a rural area we don’t have charging stations like that. It is neat to see one!!

How much does it cost to charge at a station like that? The ones I’ve seen around where we live are all complimentary so I never even knew that there were ‘paid for’ charging stations like that!

The whole thing sounds so futuristic to me! It’s really pretty neat, and I have to say that they’re pretty genius with the texting each other about charging in your building!

This is awesome, I always wondered how it worked.

Electric cars are interesting to me. Pretty sure they don’t make an EV big enough for my family.

They have small SUVs but I think bigger ones are on the way 🙂

This was interesting to read. I did have a mild curiosity about them, and now I feel like I know a bit more about them!
