Bloggy Boot Camp, San Francisco CA – 8/21/10

by TerriAnn

Event: Bloogy Boot Camp by SITS Girls
Date: August 21, 2010
Location: Westin St. Francis Hotel, San Francisco CA
Time: 9:00am – 5:00pm

What a fantastic introduction to blog conferences! Bloggy Boot Camp graced San Francisco yesterday. The group was small (~100), we played musical tables (after each speaker), and everyone was tweeting like crazy. SITS (The Secret is in the Support) created a great opportunity to meet and talk to some amazing bloggers.

Friday I was frantically searching to see if anyone was selling their ticket. After spamming all tweeters with #bloggybootcamp, I was able to get one. I’m glad I did. The whole ‘women and social media’ conferences were a bit of a mystery for me.

I think these are great for those just starting out to get a better idea of the basics. As the focus of each blogger was different there were bound to be some parts that were more applicable than others. These are the points I was able to take away and can hopefully implement:

  • Keep it short. For vlogging pay attention to movement, lighting, angle, and background. Listen to constructive criticism. – Jessica Bern
  • Careful of what you post online as almost everything can be tracked. – Julie
  • Marketing is not ‘icky’. You are a consumer with strong opinions. “We see, we like, we share.” – Ciaran Blumenfeld
  • People can unfollow just as quickly so respond to tweets/email/etc. Be careful what you tweet as it can be held against you. – Jennifer James
  • You own your text and images. If you make money create a separate bank account. Use capitals and puntuation. – Linsey Krolik
  • Affiliates hijack your traffic. Opensky allows you to be the retailer, not the referrer. There is no contract and Opensky takes care of everything else  for you. – Ted Rubin
  • Choose your brand/name carefully as it sticks. Tweets should always be genuine so do not use bots and engage people. – Tiffany from SITS Girls

I also got a chance to meet local bloggers as well as those a bit further away. Some new bloggy friends: Michelle, Ana, Julie, Holly, Jenn, Jenny, Gabriela, Karen, Peaches, Venus, and more (I just can’t remember their names or didn’t get a business card so message me if you see this). The conference part was educational but the real benefit, at least in my eyes, was the great networking experience!

Really? I’m sure you met some amazing bloggers there as well. Bloggy Boot Camp has a nice atmosphere so you can get to know a few people and talk.

Hi Terri Ann,
It was nice meeting you afterwards, in the lounge! The day passed so quickly, we hadvery little time to interact and I would have loved more of that. I appreciate your recap, nicely done and you caught all the key points.
I am nicely defrosted now, finally!
Take care,
XO
Heidi

I know, it was freezing. Nice meeting you also. Maybe we can make a point to get together at the next meet-up! Thanks for stopping by and reading the post.
