Stuff. It’s everywhere. No matter how simply we try to live, when kids are in the household, amassing large amounts of toys and “I have to have that” items over the years is pretty much inevitable. As junk drawers and closets fill, these begin spilling out onto sofas, tables, chairs, and the floor. When we have a tough time navigating a clear walking path in our daughter’s room, it’s definitely time to enter full Declutter Mode!

When Munchkin was little, we had toys and stuffed animals galore. It all seemed more manageable then though. Since her attention span was so short, we could actually put some of her toys away for a weeks and, when we brought them out again, it was if they were brand new to her. We cycled her toys out this way for a while and it was fabulous!

However, as she got older, she was not as easily impressed. Plus, we were running out of storage space as we had to downsize a few times. That’s when we started selling the items that Munchkin no longer played with but were still in good condition. We could then use that money to buy her new items that better suited her age and interests.

We have gone through this process many times over as we continuously clear out her room. Somehow, though, she always seems to have more. I can’t even remember the last time she played with her Polly Pockets or Squinkies… yet there they lie, still occupying one of the three storage drawers under her bed. Really, what’s a 15-year-old young woman going to do with those?!

Then there’s the collection of stuffed animals that take up two-thirds of her closet. She’s very sentimental with her “stuffies,” knowing exactly on which occasion she received each and who gave it to her. This is what’s left from the gazillions she previously had to part with?! The last time we moved, we told her that she could only bring one large box of stuffed animals and that she had to chose her absolute favorites. It took her days to decide and she still has all of this!

So now that we know it’s time to do a huge cleaning, there’s one problem. Way back when, we used a couple of popular platforms to “recycle” her toys. But, as time has passed, those sites have either been overrun by scammers and flaky buyers or inflict such hefty fees that the profit barely covers packaging costs. Fortunately, there’s a better option. You can easily buy and sell with Close5.

As I see the number of toys in my daughter’s room dwindle, I have to say that it is a bit saddening. It’s proof that she’s growing up. At least we can help equip her with a good start by learning to declutter now and making use of tools like Close5. Oh, and it’s nice to walk through our house again without stacks of stuff scattered about all of the time 😛
