Draw Something [iOS]

by TerriAnn

Have you started to play the new game, Draw Something, on your iPhone or iPad? If not, why?!

There have been a great many of attempts to come up with fun social games in which people can instantaneously play with their friends, no matter where they might be. Some have been good while others missed the mark completely. This app is in a category of its own – it’s DRAWSOME!

The idea is simple. Log in with your email or Facebook account. Invite friends to play a game. Draw one of the three given words and let your friend guess what it is using the several letters provided. It’s like Pictionary without the yelling and public embarrassment, which is a good thing. You may think you know your family and friends but you get a whole new view of them when you see how and what they draw. We even have games going with some family in the Netherlands! It’s hilarious!

To start, you can install the free version. You can build up coins fairly quickly and those can be used to purchase more colors and hints. There are ads but they do not really hinder gameplay. To make it even more engaging, you can work together to see how long you can keep guessing each other’s words without passing. We recently ‘splurged’ and got the 99 cent version (all three of us use the same iTunes account so we can share the apps too) because it added an extra 2000 words. There’s only so many times we can draw ‘aquarium’ and ‘nest’.

Sometimes my husband, daughter, and I will sit around the table and play each other. My husband prefers to play on the iPad with a tablet pen since he says his fingers are too big to draw on the iPhone. I love that it’s a light game which you pick up, play a bit, then put it down. It is not stressful and does not require a ton of brain power (for the time you’re running low). Yet, every time I play this app, there is grin on my face with a few giggles and “what in the world?!”s here and there. You don’t need to be a fantastic artist but you do need to have at least a little imagination. Like some of my creations?

So give it a try and start a few games with friends. Just be warned that you may get SLIGHTLY addicted…

I tried it but the app kept having problems so I gave up. 🙁

Oh? I wonder if that was a little while ago. It seems there was a surge of interest and sometimes it would hang. Now it seems they fixed it. You’d probably have a ball playing your kids!

I love Draw Something! I’ve been a slacker though and have a bazillion games going on, Ahhh! It’s addictive!

I’ve been slacking as well. I had to laugh one time though. I have a friend that I played several word games with before and she totally beat me every time. I gave her a word and she knew it right away – the funny thing is that she could not spell it and it was only 5 letters! She went through so many versions/spellings of the word and even used a bomb. The word was ‘fairy’ 😛

Yes, he said it was too hard on the iPhone. I still use my finger on the iPhone though. BTW, love your Wonder Woman avatar

I play on my droid. I have the free version but am jealous of my friends who can draw in color! I haven’t gone through all of the words yet so I am still okay to play for free.

Oh, you can get new colors on the free version. When you’re drawing a pic, click the + icon near the colors. You need 259 coins to get a new color pack which doesn’t take too long to get to.

Those are some really great illustrations! Every time I download drawing phone apps, they never come out even half as good.

Thanks – I am quite proud of my glorified stick figures 🙂 It’s from years of doodling for my daughter!

Thanks to get us informed about such a nice lite game. I’m glad to know the way how you play it with your husband & daughter. It could be a great family game.
