Earlier this month Kia invited me to a press event in San Diego, California, to test their 4th and newest generation, the new 2017 Kia Sportage. Kia wanted the exterior design to inspire such words as sporty, dynamic, energy, agility, tension, seductive, precision — and I think they hit the nail on the head!

It seems that every detail was improved upon. The lines of the exterior design are a bit sharper overall and I appreciate that it has just the right amount of chrome accents, especially on the back door of the SX Turbo. The Sportage will definitely stand out from other vehicles in the crowded market of CUVs.

What about the inside? The interior is impressive with lots of soft touch materials, a standard we’ve gotten used to from Kia. When it comes to tech, the new 2017 Kia Sportage has plenty. It includes Apple Car Play and Android Auto (coming in April), blind spot detection, forward collision, folding mirror, lane assist, and more. The Sportage is equipped with a stellar Harman-Kardon audio system to deliver premium sound and the UVO 3 Infotainment System includes 14 FREE services such as Diagnosics, Geo-fencing, Curfew Alert, and Parking Minder at no additional cost.

According to Kia, the new 2017 Kia Sportage is now the widest car in its class. A few inches have been added in all directions. This results in a bit more cargo space too (18% increase to be exact) compared to last year’s model. The seats fold flatter as well, which is appreciated when trying to load things in or out.

All wheel drive (AWD) is optional on all trims. The AWD performed great, especially when we tested it on a very steep hill and sandy roads. Apparently, Kia is using some new advanced AWD system called Magna Dynamax, which is an upgrade from conventional AWD systems. I have no idea what that means, though, since it’s just a tad too technical for me. The front wheel drive (FWD) did an outstanding job as well. The car felt very sturdy on the windy roads, probably due to the fact that 51% of the body is constructed with high strength steel.

The New 2017 Kia Sportage is Available Now!

The Sportage starts at $22,990, while the top trim with all the extra options goes for $34,000. Shipments have already gone out to dealers nationwide so you can pick up your new 2017 Kia Sportage!

I was invited on a media event for which the lodging, travel, and food was provided. All opinions are my own.
