Blood Moon - April 15, 2014 #BloodMoon

We were exhausted but it was definitely worth it to stay up past midnight to see the total lunar eclipse known as the Blood Moon. We had to deal with some cloudiness but Frans was still able to capture this from our balcony. Venus was shining brightly but was too far to get in to the picture. At least Spica (we had to look up what star it was) got to to make its appearance in this photo.

SALON explains, “What’s so special about this blood moon?”

This blood moon is special because it is the first lunar eclipse that is part of a blood moon tetrad. A tetrad is a series of four lunar eclipses that happen within six-month intervals of each other. The first takes place the early morning hours of April 15; the next is on Oct. 8 of this year, followed by two in 2015 on April 4 and Sept. 28.

Did your family get to see it? Will you try to see the next three?

I’m so tired anymore and am participating in a challenge to get 8 hours of sleep a night, I couldn’t watch it.. I am surprised my husband didn’t get up to see it though. The photos sure are beautiful!

Oh my gosh, that is gorgeous! How did I miss that??? Wow, that is GORGEOUS!!!! I am TOTALLY going to try to see the next one…is it safe to view with a telescope?

TerriAnn van Gosliga April 19, 2014 - 5:17 pm

Safe? It’s a lunar eclipse so there shouldn’t be any danger to your eyes (it’s those solar eclipses that you have to be careful of). I’m sure it’d look amazing through a telescope – just be aware that it seemed to move pretty fast across the sky so if the lens is too powerful it might be tough to keep it in view w/o adjusting it often.

I stayed up to see it but unfortunately our home is situated in such a way that I couldn’t get any good pictures of it 🙁 Yours is great. Maybe I’ll catch the one in October!

The kids didn’t make it, and even I dozed off about an hour before, but luckily my husband stayed awake and woke me up in time to see the awesomeness! I’ll be making sure my kids get to view the next one.
