SpellQuizzer

As a homeschooling parent, I know first hand how much work it can be to teach your children or help them with homework. When the child doesn’t ‘get it’ right away, frustration can be felt on both sides as learning becomes a chore and a battle. This is especially true when working on spelling. Those tedious little lists that your child must memorize and practice have caused many tears and much friction. We can try to make it more interesting but ultimately we get tired and bored, wondering why the child keeps getting specific words wrong again and again. That just makes him/her shut off mentally and the cycle continues.

Spellquizzer takes that bit out of the equation. You download a small program to help quiz your child in your place. There are free downloadable spelling lists you can import or create your own. With each word you enter, you have the option of adding an audio recording. So if the spelling word is ‘time’ you can have the prompt say (in your voice), “Once upon a TIME there was a beautiful princess.” The child can then play it over repeatedly without someone across the table raising their voice or pulling out their hair. Plus, you can make it fun by using silly sentences or varied voices.

The layout and usage is very clear. Importing spelling lists is a bit of a pain as you have to download them first then import each one by one. I wish it was possible to import a Word document or Excel spreadsheet for larger lists. I’m such an online girl that I prefer everything to be accessible online versus having the software installed on my computer.  I’m glad there is the SpellQuizzer community site for additional lists and program support.

The correction is simple and clear. They merely get a message and an opportunity to try missed words later on. If they get all the words correct, they will get a full audience applause and a pop-up confirmation.

We have found that my daughter benefits from a more interactive program and spelling lists just don’t work for her. If you are supplementing your child’s public school education or are preparing for some sort of spelling competition, you would really enjoy using SpellQuizzer. You can download a free trial for 30 days, after which it’s only $29.95 with a money-back guarantee. So give it a try and, hopefully, get your child on the road to good spelling.

I had no idea that you homeschooled as well! I love finding out new things about the blogs that I visit. :)

I love that you can try out SpellQuizzer for 30 days free of charge. And I also am thrilled to see that they have actual screen shots. Homeschoolers usually don’t have a lot of money to throw around on study materials that don’t work for them and I loathe not being able to see something before I make a purchase.

MANDATORY ENTRY: My favorite feature of this software is the option to input one’s spelling words from school, that is awesome and something my daughter can really benefit from. Actually, my daughter tests real well on her spelling tests (1st grade), but it is such a hassle practicing her words with her after school everyday. UGH! I really need this software!!!
