San Diego is a beautiful area with a lot to see and more to do. What fun is it if you don’t have a great hotel as a home base though? We (my husband, my daughter, and myself) had a chance to stay at the Westin Gaslamp Quarter during our recent trip to San Diego.

One of the best things about this hotel is the location. Bordering the Gaslamp district, this 16-floor, 4-star Westin is close enough to all major sights without being completely immersed in the full hustle and bustle of the Gaslamp nightlife. It also sits right next to a 4-level mega-mall that includes everything, even a movie theatre and post office!

The entrance is very open and well-attended to. Even at night I did not feel uncomfortable or unsafe as the area is well-lit and the valet staff was always present. The only parking at the hotel is via valet service and is a bit steep. The $36 does cover in-and-out privileges though and is the most convenient option.

Don’t worry if you have a lot of luggage. Luggage carts are constantly on-hand and the Westin staff is more than eager to assist you in checking in and getting to your room as easily as possible. All charges and arrangements were outlined while clear directions were given. We were supposed to get a complimentary upgrade to an Executive King room but they had overbooked. Instead we were placed in a Deluxe Bay View room.

As we entered our room on the top (16th) floor we were impressed with what we found.

Clean, spacious, and offering several places to sit – this room was just what we needed. Even with all our luggage spread out, we still had enough space to move about. Within a few minutes our rollaway bed was brought to the room and was placed in the area we had cleared. At that point we did need to put some items on the armchairs but the room never felt cramped.

The beds were soft and came with plenty of pillows. It was a bit too soft for my husband though and, after four nights, I did get a massage for him so he could survive the drive home. At certain points we could hear the guests in the next room over, but we were still able to sleep. The mini-fridge was placed inside a cabinet. So, while it was handy to use, were were not subjected to it’s humming all night long.

The bathroom was bright and equally as clean. Everything appeared well-maintained and we did not notice any cracks or stains. The water pressure was perfect and the temperature stayed consistent. I would have liked more towel racks as there was really no place to put our towels. The magnifying mirror that pulled out was fantastic for makeup application and a nice touch of detail.

I was able to hang all my outfits in the closet and I did not even need the drawers that were located in the adjacent area. The included safe was easy to use and large enough for our camera, laptop, etc. Another plus was being on the top floor as we had a beautiful view.

Though we were disappointed with the pool being closed for maintenance during half of our trip, we really enjoyed our stay here. As mentioned before, the hotel was very clean. I usually get grossed out with the floors in hotels and won’t even touch them with my bare feet. I still wore slippers the majority of the time but if I had to run across the room to get something before I got in the shower, it was fine.

What really shined was the fact that every single staff member we encountered was extremely helpful and friendly. From the front desk, to the valet, to the room service it seemed as if each one took great pride in making and keeping their guests happy. With larger suites available, this is a great place to look into when traveling with the family. Just make sure to book early, especially in the summer months!

It was nice but tough being so far from the main conference site. It was fantastic to meet you as well – get ready to see yourself on my site soon in my BlogHer recap 🙂

What an awesome hotel you stayed in. The first night I stayed in an older motel on the outside of downtown because I came in at 4am and got the first thing available.

The second night I found a nice suite for me and the kids in Little Italy which is near the Gaslamp area.

I can’t wait to be able to go back to San Diego for a little site seeing.

I know – it was so busy that it was more of a business trip than a vacation. Glad your family was able to join you though 🙂
