Wordless Wednesday – Blue Mystique Orchids #WW

by TerriAnn

I saw this blue orchid plant and was so going to dish out $30 to get one. Good thing I decided to do some research first – they may look cool but after they die they grow back white. Bummer!

That’s gorgeous! Too bad they don’t grow back the same!

Cookies & Clogs March 20, 2012 - 9:56 am

I know, it kind of defeats the purpose doesn’t it?

Liz @ A Nut in a Nutshell March 14, 2012 - 11:32 am

Hey, that’s kinda like a bait and switch! What a naughty plant!

Cookies & Clogs March 20, 2012 - 9:57 am

Haha, I suppose that’s one way to look at it. After I got home and researched it I just thought, “Man, that is so wrong…”

Henrietta March 14, 2012 - 12:22 pm

Oh it’s beautiful when it’s blue! How sad that it just doesn’t last! Pricey!

Cookies & Clogs March 20, 2012 - 9:59 am

Yes, that bright yellow price tag would suggest you’re getting a discount… Sneaky…

Beth March 14, 2012 - 12:31 pm

Beautiful! I think I would be happy with the white though!;)

Cookies & Clogs March 20, 2012 - 10:00 am

I know, orchids are just so pretty. Still, the whole ‘cool’ part wears off after the blooms fall off 🙁

Tammy March 14, 2012 - 1:27 pm

They sure are pretty 🙂

Cookies & Clogs March 20, 2012 - 10:01 am

I think they are just so unique that they are very eye-catching!

Katie March 14, 2012 - 1:38 pm

oh boo! It’s super unique!

Cookies & Clogs March 20, 2012 - 10:02 am

Well, maybe they’ll figure out how to keep the color coming back. For now it seems more of a novelty than a stroke of genius.

Kelly March 14, 2012 - 2:02 pm

Gorgeous! This is going to sound terrible, but I didn’t realize orchids grow back! I’ve been chucking them after they die. Lordy!

Cookies & Clogs March 20, 2012 - 10:05 am

AHAHAHAAHAHAHH! Ahem, sorry for that slight outburst 🙂 Yes, they can come back and are sometimes more beautiful than the first bloom, in the right hands of course. So next time someone dishes out some good dough to buy you an orchid plant, dont’ toss it right away. Cut the stem and wait for the next year.

jen March 14, 2012 - 2:29 pm

Pretty though. I can never get orchids to come back at all. Usually mine just die.

Cookies & Clogs March 20, 2012 - 10:06 am

Me too. I’ve tried but just cannot keep them going. One time a friend of mine ‘babysat’ my orchids until they regenerated and they actually grew back. But then I killed it later 😛

Stacie @ The Divine Miss Mommy March 14, 2012 - 2:34 pm

They are beautiful. I love Orchids. Not sure I have seen the blue ones.

Cookies & Clogs March 20, 2012 - 10:07 am

Well, it’s some kind of new technology. With them not growing back that color I wonder how popular they will get, kwim?

Danielle @ Royalegacy March 14, 2012 - 2:40 pm

I wonder what they give it to make it blue in the first place? Might be worth checking into since it is just a white orchid to begin with.

Cookies & Clogs March 20, 2012 - 10:13 am

You can see the website addy in the picture to the right. I honestly didn’t really ‘get’ it and a rep from the company actually posted a comment below about it. Very interesting stuff though.

Carolyn g March 14, 2012 - 4:18 pm

Those are beautiful but such a shame they don;t grow back blue.

Cookies & Clogs March 20, 2012 - 10:13 am

I know. If they did I would have run back to the store and bought one!

Kasandria Reasoner March 14, 2012 - 5:15 pm

See I would have bought it without reading that. That’s crazy!

Cookies & Clogs March 20, 2012 - 10:34 am

Shh, don’t tell your readers that! They’d be shocked to know you impulse buy! No, I almost bought it but I happened to have my hubby with me who, ahem, suggested I check it out first.

Kathy March 14, 2012 - 5:20 pm

It is really pretty, it would be pretty in white too!

Cookies & Clogs March 20, 2012 - 10:35 am

Well, the thing was, those flowers were HUGE! So, with the right care, I’m sure they would grow back pretty – just not blue.

Candace March 14, 2012 - 6:11 pm

That is so beautiful!

Cookies & Clogs March 20, 2012 - 10:36 am

They are cool, right?!

Amy March 14, 2012 - 6:52 pm

Beautiful, but wow that’s crazy they don’t come back blue.

Cookies & Clogs March 20, 2012 - 10:37 am

Too bad though. If they find a way to fix that (like add iron to the soil or something like you do with hyacinths) then they’d be totally awesome!

nicole March 14, 2012 - 10:11 pm

That is beautiful, I am glad you said the thing about them growing back white, I would have been bummed if I dished out the money and didn’t know that.

Cookies & Clogs March 20, 2012 - 10:38 am

I know, right? That was the thing I was concerned about and the Safeway florist lady had no clue. I’m glad I happened to snap theses shots so I could check out their website at home.

Brandy March 15, 2012 - 8:24 am

More lovely photos… always enjoy your pictures! <3

Cookies & Clogs March 20, 2012 - 10:49 am

Thanks. I had to do quite a bit of work on these though because I just took a quick pic on my iPhone in the grocery store. The lighting was horrible and I didn’t it quick so I wouldn’t get in trouble 😛

Maryann March 15, 2012 - 9:52 am

Always pay to research, although white would be beautiful too.

Cookies & Clogs March 20, 2012 - 10:50 am

Especially since it save me from paying in the first place 😆

Paula March 15, 2012 - 10:43 am

How long do they stay bloomed blue? They’re beautiful!

Cookies & Clogs March 20, 2012 - 10:50 am

I’m assuming the typical length. Orchids can stay in bloom for a REALLY long time before they fall off!

Stefani March 15, 2012 - 10:47 am

Those are pretty! You don’t see blue flowers too often…

Cookies & Clogs March 20, 2012 - 10:51 am

True, and almost NEVER on an orchid!

Jenny March 15, 2012 - 11:17 am

Oh, those are pretty!

Cookies & Clogs March 20, 2012 - 11:06 am

Aren’t they neat?

Hanan March 15, 2012 - 12:17 pm

Wow, those are gorgeous!

Cookies & Clogs March 20, 2012 - 11:06 am

Yes, they are!

Shasta March 15, 2012 - 5:38 pm

Wow! That is really beautiful

Cookies & Clogs March 20, 2012 - 11:19 am

I thought so too. The florist at the store was looking at me funny when I taking the picture!

Allie March 15, 2012 - 9:53 pm

You really have to love orchids. But those are very beautiful, almost unreal.

Cookies & Clogs March 20, 2012 - 11:20 am

I originally thought it was fake. The shade of blue is a bit to unnatural but I still thought it looked interesting.

Katie March 16, 2012 - 8:30 am

Very cool- but what a bummer it comes back white. What’s up with that?

Cookies & Clogs March 20, 2012 - 12:32 pm

Haha, you word it so eloquently 😛 I know, it kind of defeats the purpose, right?

ohkeeka [The Type A Housewife] March 18, 2012 - 3:05 pm

That is a beautiful orchid–are they dyed to get them to be blue and that’s why they come back white? So weird!

Cookies & Clogs March 20, 2012 - 12:34 pm

It’s some kind of special technological process but with it not re-blooming that color, it almost seems like it’s still in the experimenting phase versus a final breakthrough.

Toine March 19, 2012 - 1:20 pm

Hi,
Great to see such positive reactions!
The ‘Blue Mystique’ and their sister plants, “Lilac Mystique”, are produced by our company , Westerlay Orchids, here on the West Coast.
We infuse white orchids through a patented technique that we license from the Netherlands. With proper care, they will as long as a any phalaenopsis in flower (2+ months). After that the dye is wholly absorbed in the plant and it will re-flower white.

Cookies & Clogs March 20, 2012 - 8:10 am

Thank you for coming by my site and reading my post. Based on your email I knew you had to be related to something Dutch (my daughter went to one school name De Toveraars in Etten-Leur). I think the sad part is that some may be willing to buy the orchid even at inflated prices, not knowing it doesn’t grow back that color.

Danielle @ Royalegacy March 20, 2012 - 11:13 am

Hm…Then we can’t get it to bloom blue again. I don’t think it is worth it. It’s very pretty though.

Brandy April 16, 2012 - 10:00 am

Yes these are really cool. Nice!

Cookies & Clogs April 20, 2012 - 12:35 pm

I know – I wonder what color they will come up with next!

Hikari April 19, 2012 - 9:46 am

Ahahahah! Of course they won’t grow back blue! Using dye to change a flower’s color as existed since Mesopotamia. This is one of history’s oldest pieces of common knowledge. And it’s basic 1st grade science. If you want it to be blue when it grows back you just add more dye to the soil. You can also make it fluorescent if you want.

Cookies & Clogs April 20, 2012 - 12:41 pm

This is not dyed by adding color to the soil like you would in a school experiment with colored water. Various plants also respond differently to various minerals in the ground such as hyacinths, making them blue, purple, white, or pink. These are advertised as a new process in germination, affecting the buds and initial stage of growth…

Taichigrl September 20, 2012 - 5:41 am

Indigo Orchids are a rip-off. The one I bought had a small nick in the stem and when I touched it the
blue dye, which I assume is food dye, came off on my finger. Spread the word….don’t waste your money.

TerriAnn van Gosliga October 7, 2012 - 1:56 pm

Good to know. I think is a different company but thanks for the warning!

Misty January 26, 2013 - 9:29 pm

I thought it was Hydrangeas that changed color by lime or aluminum to change the Ph. Anywho, my husband bought a Blue Mystic for me and they are beautiful. The dye is injected into the roots. It’s kind of a rip off but still very beautiful.
