As my daughter gets older, we find it harder and harder to find age-appropriate shows for her. Most “teen” titles deal with heavy angst, issues surrounding drug and alcohol use, dating/sex, a derogatory portrayal of adults, etc. and those are too mature for her. Though she enjoys superhero action movies, she tends to gravitate to lighter subject matters. One series that she enjoys, which came as a complete surprise to me, was Project Mc2.
Appeal of Project Mc2 for Tweens & Teens
A few months ago, I told you about Project Mc2. It’s aimed at tween girls and chronicles their undercover spy activities. The interesting thing is that it has a major focus on science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM) and the girls’ mental abilities. They even have a sidekick in the form of an emoji-loving AI tablet. The cast is diverse and the characters are not cookie-cutter ditzy high school groupies.
The funny thing is that I thought the show’s appeal would max out at girls around 12 years old. It is pretty corny and doesn’t dig deep into any complex plots. But, it seems that even teen girls can find some fun in it. I only recently found out just how much my daughter enjoys this series. She devoured each season as soon as it was available. I often found her giggling in the corner and now I know why. She was busy watching the silly antics and sugar-sweet dynamics of this peppy spy team.
The entire story is contained in 15 episodes (about 25 minutes each) spread out across three parts. Season one is only three episodes while the second season is six. The third season was just released this month and is also six episodes. Munchkin was unhappy with the one “kiss” scene (yes, she’s still grossed out by this) but she said the story itself was interesting. If you’re looking for an innocent and light series for girls, Project Mc2 might be just the thing!
I received a year subscription of Netflix and a device to stream the content as part of the Netflix Stream Team. All opinions are my own.
