In Georgia, there lies a HUGE slab of granite just popping up out of the earth. Stone Mountain is a unique and memorable place to visit when going visiting Atlanta, Georgia. From the mostly flat landscape of the state, the famous landmark seems a bit out of place but has come to be a great destination spot for locals and tourists alike.
With the sun shining and ‘tourist’ mode on, we were geared up and ready to make the hike up the mountain. Much of the way was fairly gentle incline but it did become a bit steeper as we ascended. Even with a four-year-old the climb up was very doable and a wonderful view awaited us at the top. We were fortunate to have made the trip on a clear day and the vantage point we had was indescribable. Stone Mountain does not have a real peak in the sense of one elevated tip. Instead, the area was very broad and did not feel crowded even with several others touring the same space.
We felt fully accomplished by making it all the way to the top. Now we had no guilt about taking the ‘easy’ way down on the gondola (called Summit Skyride). In fact, it was a nice treat to walk around the visitor area as we waited for the next available car and enjoy the unique scenery from above. Not only that but we got an up-close glimpse of the monumental carving in the side of the mountain. The one-way pass was only about $5 per person but even the roundtrip ticket is reasonable as well.
By the time we had gotten down the mountain the other attractions here were closing down. From what I saw on the Stone Mountain Park website there are various activities to enjoy throughout the year. From sledding in the winter to treetop hikes in the summer, there are so many activities I’d like to participate in during our next visit here. They even have special pricing and scheduling for select homeschool days!
When you are done with the hustle and bustle the city, you may want to spend a day or two taking in the sights and wonders at Stone Mountain.

Oh gosh.. you brought back some great memories for me! I was raised in Atlanta, and remember quite well going to Stone Mountain as a child. And later as a teen on the weekends. 🙂

Near the top it is a bit intimidating but there are railings at the steepest part. We only had a short visit but we’d like to go again someday 🙂 Thanks!
