Here in California, one thing usually taken too lightly is the threat of earthquakes. There used to be a commercial about California cows and when they felt the ground shake, they nonchalantly said, “Fooooootttt massssaaaaggee!” Then, back in the day, I also remember people going around wearing shirts that read “I survived the quake of ’89”. Such things are not funny though.

Over twenty years later, many things have changed. Natural disasters are happening all over, even in places previous unaffected. In fact, my husband and I were just talking about putting together a supply kit just in case. It’s probably easier to pick up a pre-assembled one but, cost-wise, it makes more sense for us to [buy emergency food](http://buyemergencyfoods.com/survival-gear/freeze-dried-meats?ref=cookiesandclogs.com) and other supplies separately then stick them all in a backpack (our local warehouse store had them in a backpack – great idea).

Aside from first-aid supplies, blankets, flashlights, and radios, the most important item we’ll need to pick up is some [survival food](http://buyemergencyfoods.com/survival-gear/survival-food?ref=cookiesandclogs.com) to last us a few days and some kind of durable [food storage](http://buyemergencyfoods.com/survival-gear/long-term-food-storage?ref=cookiesandclogs.com). Also, one commercially sold kit I saw included some coloring books and activities for children. As my daughter is older we probably won’t need those but, who knows, maybe I’ll need them to retain sanity depending on the situation we might find ourselves in.

Do you have a disaster emergency prepared? What do you have in it and where is it kept?
