It’s been years since I’ve watched Mary Poppins but it’s about time I did so again. With the release of [Mary Poppins 50th Anniversary Edition](http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00E9ZAT4Y/ref=as%5Fli%5Fss%5Ftl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B00E9ZAT4Y&linkCode=as2&tag=cookiesandclogs-20&ref=cookiesandclogs.com)

Blu-ray / DVD, as well as the upcoming Saving Mr. Banks (the film which follows Walt Disney’s efforts to procure the rights to make the movie from author P.L. Travers), there’s no time better than the present!

### Re-Experiencing Mary Poppins

Together with my husband and daughter, we got to see the wonderfully-restored classic. Aside from some green screen work that looked a bit worn, the rest of the video footage looked fantastic and extremely clear. For a live action film from 1964, that’s really saying a lot! The songs are as charming as ever and that accent by Dick van Dyke is just awesome 🙂

During the the [interview with Pete Menefee](https://www.cookiesandclogs.com/pete-menefee-mary-poppins/), he told us that the sound of the penguins dancing was actually that of the folly crew (people doing the sound effects) slapping their bare bellies. Who knew?! My family had an extra fun time watching that animation sequence with that image in mind!

### Bonus Features

On the Blu-ray and HD Digital copies, bonus features included are:

- **Mary-OKE’s** – New piece highlights popular music from the film, specifically “Spoon Full of Sugar,” “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious,” Step In Time,” “Chim Chim Cher-ee” and allows viewer to sing-along to animated words that display onscreen in unique ways.
- **Becoming Mr. Sherman (TBC by theatrical team) –** Join actor Jason Schwartzman as he sits down for a fun and musical-filled afternoon with Richard Sherman. In the new film, SAVING MR BANKS, Schwartzman portrays the Disney Legend… half of the famous composing team, the Sherman Brothers who wrote all the classic songs from MARY POPPINS, as well as many other favorites. Hear heartwarming, revealing stories about the making of this beloved musical, get more insight on working with Walt Disney, and get a unique sneak peek into SAVING MR BANKS, starring Tom Hanks, and Emma Thompson.

I’d highly recommend picking this up and watching it AFTER you see Saving Mr. Banks. Not only will you add a family favorite to your collection but you’ll have a new appreciation for it. Knowing the story behind the author’s reluctance and Walt’s perseverance, turns Mary Poppins into so much more than a simple children’s movie but more of a family treasure!
