Metromile Car Insurance for SAHM or Homeschool Parents

For years Frans and I shared a car. Frans generally worked close enough to home that I could drop him off in the morning, use the car during the day, then pick him up afterwards. A few years ago, though, the company Frans worked for relocated to San Francisco. He now needed the car all of the time and I would be stuck at home with no transportation. That was when we finally got a second car. We really could have used Metromile car insurance then — it would have saved us so much!

I didn’t need to drive very often. I was a stay at home mom and my daughter was in homeschool. We only needed to leave the house to do errands or to bring our daughter to extra classes once or twice a week. Otherwise, that second car stayed parked in front of our house most of the time.

Metromile Car Insurance — Drive Less, Save More

Metromile is a pay-per-mile car insurance. The main device, called a Metromile Pulse, plugs into the OBD port under the dash. The mileage is automatically tracked and that’s what you pay for. You just pay a low base rate and then only a few cents for each mile you drive, saving you up to $500 per year compared to traditional auto insurance.

If you are driving less than 10,000 miles a year, it’s fantastic to have an insurance company that offers pay-as-you-go pricing. Then you could have full coverage on the road without being charged for when your car is just sitting in the driveway. That’s why I find Metromile car insurance so intriguing.

Another feature we would have benefited from is in the Metromile app. It contains an alert to remind you which day the street sweeper will be coming. Across the street from where we used to live, signs were posted along the road that prohibited parking between the hours of 12 – 6pm on Thursday (it was several years ago so I might have the time and day wrong). Cars that were parked on that side of the street during that time slot were cited for, I believe, a $45 fee. We often forgot about this, resulting in occasional parking tickets for us and sometimes those visitng us. Not fun.

Metromile Car Insurance — A Great Option

So if you have a car that you don’t drive very often or very far, Metromile might be a good option. You can pay less but still be fully covered. This service would also be great if you have teen or young adult drivers and for stretching the family budget. Be on the lookout for those posts soon 🙂

The pay-per-mile insurance is currently available in California, Illinois, New Jersey, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Washington.
