When we bought our condo in the Netherlands (in Europe, aka Holland), we were excited to move in and quickly get settled. One of the challenges we faced, though, was space. That was especially true for my daughter’s room. It was so small that we could only fit a bed and small dresser in there. That also limited how much we could decorate it. Aside from the bedding, we were only left with the walls. For a young child’s room, I wanted something bold and fun but had to figure out a way to not make the room appear even smaller than it actually was.

Painting started when my one of my sisters and mom came to visit. First, I just painted a curvy line about two-thirds up on the wall. Then we filled in the bottom portion with color. Keeping the top part white helped reflect light in the room and prevented the room from appearing ‘boxed in’. I then found a couple images of flowers and butterflies to trace on stenciling sheets and cut out. The stencils made it so easy!

To pull it all together, we added a few pictures found at IKEA and later got a bright Winnie the Pooh duvet cover/set. This is how it turned out:

My daughter loved it for the whole time we lived there. Even after six years, she still remembers that room and tells me how much she liked it. Since then, my daughter’s rooms have been much bigger but I still haven’t been able to top the ‘cuteness’ of this one. Since the size was so restricting, it forced me to be more creative. What has been your experience in decorating a small space?
