Last month my family and attended a little cooking demo with Chef Nikki Shaw and CravOn Fries. CravOn Fries are never fried. Instead, they are blanched, frozen, then packaged so you can bake them at home. This was my first time trying, or even hearing about, CravOn Fries. I must admit that the idea sounded great and WAY better than any type of fried preparation. Oh, and I loved the fact that they are gluten-free so my hubs could enjoy them too.<\/p>\n

To prepare the fries, we just laid out some parchment paper on a cooking sheet and spread the frozen fries to form one flat layer. Then we just popped them in the ovens for about 15 minutes and they were done. Annatto is added to the fries to give a natural color so the fries looked golden brown when they came out. They were not crunchy though. That’s the difference between being fried and being baked. So, while the flavor was comparable, it was tough to adjust to the texture of the fries.<\/p>\n

\nBut how did they taste?<\/p>\n
They were actually pretty good. In the demo kitchen, we made fresh pesto at one point and marinara-covered meatballs at another to serve with the fries. Since CravOn Fries come pre-seasoned with olive oil and salt, my family actually preferred them plain. The potato tasted fresh and light. That’s something I’ve never said about fried french fries.<\/p>\n

CravOn<\/a> produces four varieties of fries: Ripple Cut, Steak Cut, Diamond Cut, and Anytime Diced. I found the Steak Cut to be more solid but I’ve never really been a fan of the ripple shape anyway. We didn’t have time to try the other two but got coupons to get a couple of packages later. By the way, these products are only available in California for now but there are plans to expand soon.
