Whoo-hoo! Big Hero 6 just opened in theaters today! Oh my goodness, it is sooooooo good! This is a fantastic movie that’s full of feeling, has a coherent plot, doesn’t play to any stereotypes with the characters, has perfectly placed humor, and provides “action” without getting viciously violent. Is it possible to even have all of these combine for a film the whole family can enjoy? Well, Disney has proved that it is with this Big Hero 6 movie.

NOTE: I’ll mention it again later but make sure to stay until after the credits!!

Big Hero 6 is set in the city of San Fransokyo and focuses on boy-genius, Hiro, and the personal health care robot his late brother made, Baymax. Turns out that the fire that consumed Hiro’s brother was not an accident but, instead, a plot to steal Hiro’s invention. But who would do that and why? It’s up to Hiro, Baymax, and his new friends (who were originally friends and college classmates of his brother) to unravel the mystery.

Big Hero 6 Movie Review

The art is amazing! Living in the San Francisco Bay Area most of my life and having watched a lot of Japanese anime when younger, there were so many recognizable items and landmarks I could point out. The scenes are extremely detailed and make for a perfect background for the story.

The characters are all given plenty of screen time for you to get to know each one. While the characters are all of different nationalities (Honey Lemon is actually a light-colored Latina) and genders, we don’t get stuck with them fending off stereotypes. Each one is cool in their own way and kids are sure to find a favorite or two besides Baymax.

What Parents Should Know About Big Hero 6

The story deals a lot with the loss of a loved one how how to cope with it. It also touches on the bonds of family, friendship, and forgiveness. Yet, all this is handled with such dignity and care that everyone can enjoy the movie without feeling overwhelmed of of these. It’s a light, enjoyable film that boys, girls, comic fans, grandparents, and more will love and want to see over and over again.

Parents will want to keep in mind that there are a couple tense scenes. These aren’t scary by any means and are super short but VERY sensitive children might be startled. Also, as death is spoken about, kids might have some questions later. The only thing that I did not like was a reference to “spooning a marshmallow,” which seemed very unnecessary. Otherwise, it’s all clean and family-friendly 🙂

This is the opening weekend so make sure you see Big Hero 6 this weekend in 3D! You’re going to love it! However, I’ll warn you now that you’ll want to visit a Disney Store right after for a Baymax plushie 🙂 Do NOT forget to stay until after the credits as the extra is key to the movie and is especially awesome for Marvel fans!

Until you can get to the theater, here’s one of my favorite trailers for the movie:
