Galavant, the new comedic musical filmed in England, will be premiering tonight (Sunday, January 4th) at 8pm on ABC.<\/p>\n

I had the opportunity of interviewing\u00a0Executive Producer Dan Fogelman\u00a0in person and\u00a0Composer Alan Menken and Lyricist\u00a0Glenn Slater\u00a0via video conference. As a special surprise Joshua Sasse, Galavant himself, came to join our group. Wow, was that an intimidating team of talent?!<\/p>\n

Galavant Interview \u2013\u00a0Dan Fogelman, Alan Menken, Glenn Slater<\/h3>\n

You could tell that all four men truly enjoy working on Galavant. The show is truly\u00a0unique when compared to what’s\u00a0currently on American television.\u00a0In just the first eight episodes, 24 songs have been written for some 33 musical moments. Though all actors first record their songs in the studio, they also sing live while shooting their scenes. Everyday the shared Dropbox account would be full of new music, notes, and songs. How hard was this?<\/p>\n

Glenn: When we started the idea of writing three songs an episode, it sounded like an insurmountable difficulty. But once we got going, the music team and the writing team were\u00a0so smooth that it just became a well-oiled machine.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The cohesiveness of\u00a0Dan Fogelman,\u00a0Alan Menken, and Glenn Slater had much to do with their previous experience of working together on the movie Tangled<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Alan: By the time we got to this, we had developed a pretty good shorthand. It was essentially a three-way collaboration between Glenn, Dan, and me in terms of the vocabulary of the songs, what we want the songs to say, where we want the songs to go. It was very much like a regular musical, it’s just that it’s shorter and more economical.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Galavant Review \u2013 For Families?<\/h3>\n

Fans of Dan’s previous work on Tangled and Cars will be quite surprised at how different his style is in Galavant. He mentioned that they\u00a0“push the envelope in a lot of places” but that’s a huge understatement in my opinion (after watching the first two episodes so far).\u00a0Filled with adult humor and innuendo at almost ever turn, this series seems to be anything but family-friendly. But will you like it?<\/p>\n

Dan: If you like Princess Bride, Game of Thrones, and Monty Python, you are more likely to like this show than those who don’t.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

If you didn’t already get a chance to watch the trailer<\/a> I posted, here’s a taste of what’s in store.<\/p>\n

Screenwriter\/executive producer Dan Fogelman unites with Broadway and Hollywood award-winning musical team\u2014composer Alan Menken and lyricist Glenn Slater for a highly-anticipated comedy extravaganza. Once upon a time, the dashing hero, Galavant (Joshua Sasse), lost the love of his life, Madalena (Mallory Jansen), to the evil King Richard (Timothy Omundson). Now, our fallen hero is ready to take revenge and restore his \u201chappily ever after.\u201d But it won\u2019t be without a few twists and turns along the way.\u00a0\u201cGalavant\u201d will premiere on SUNDAY, JANUARY 4<\/strong> (8:00-9:00 p.m., ET) with two 30 minute episodes, back-to-back on the ABC Television Network. The eight episode series will run through Sunday nights in January.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
