You’ve been looking forward to this family vacation for months. You’ve made your lodging reservations, plane tickets are in hand, luggage is packed, and you finally arrive at your destination. And then you get sick or injure yourself… Unfortunately, this is a pretty common situation and, well, it’s no fun.

Inevitable Woes During Family Vacation

When my family and I were in Florida a few weeks ago, this same thing happened to us. We were all excited to be enjoying Walt Disney World together and even booked an extra day outside of the conference to just have fun. Then, on day three of five, Munchkin got sick. We left Magic Kingdom after just a short time and headed back to the hotel. There she, uhm, let it all out. (Notice that bag she was holding onto tightly for a couple of hours?)

For the rest of the trip she was nauseous. Then, when we arrived back home, Frans got sick and it took a week for him to get over it. So, when people ask us how our vacation was, it always goes something like, “Good, but Munchkin and Frans got sick.” Yeah, total bummer.

Avoiding Sickness & Treating Injuries

So, when it comes to any traveling we do this spring/summer, I’m hoping we can avoid any mishaps. Or, in the worst case scenario, at least try to lessen the impact it has on our vacation. When scouring the aisles at CVS, I found a ton of items that would be useful to have but small and portable enough to pack.

We always like to assemble our own kind of travel first aid kits. However, it’s just as easy to get a pre-assembled first-aid kit that has everything from finger splints and burn cream to aspirin and bandages. I found this awesome kit for only $17 but I had to resist the urge from buying it since we already have way too many of these already (I must have some weird first aid kit obsession).

If you’re doing a combination of flying and driving, other items might handy. All you need is someone coughing or sneezing like crazy on the plane or a rough unpaved road to put set off the sickness alert warnings. Let’s not even talk about trying to have a good time with flesh eating bugs swarming around your kids and blisters filled with puss. Oh, the joys of travel 😛

No, but really, it doesn’t have to be all that bad. Just be prepared and hope for the best. The important thing is that you have a good time together!
