Teeth Whitening

Last Tuesday, I went to San Francisco for an appointment at Soothing Dental. This dental practice is situated in what must be the coolest, art deco, vintage-style medical building I have ever seen. I went straight up to the 25th floor and walked into the spacious office. The staff was super friendly and, step-by-step, explained the ins and outs of the procedure — Zoom! teeth whitening. My teeth aren’t stained much but, in pictures, they look pretty yellow to me. I’m pretty self-conscious about it. So, teeth whitening is something I’ve always wanted to do. I just didn’t realize how serious of a process it is.

I already filled out my medical/dental information when I booked my appointment online. So, I only had to sign some waivers and was then escorted into an examination room. Both the dental assistant and dentist made it very clear that there might be “zingers.” They described them as painful shocks that make you want to jump out of the chair. Not everyone experiences them but they can be horrible for those with sensitive teeth. Since I never had a problem with sensitivity before, I thought it would be fine. Then, it was time to get the prep underway.

The dental assistant explained the procedure in detail. She then gave me 800mg ibuprofen to help with the “zingers,”took a “before” photo, applied vitamin E to my lips, made molds for the custom trays I would be taking home, and polished my teeth. The dentist, Dr. Sona Saeidi came in to do a quick examination and to point out any problem areas. Zoom! will not whiten crowns, veneers, and bonding so keep that in mind if you’re thinking about having this done. Oh, I was also given the option to put on some nifty goggles to protect my eyes and to let me watch Netflix. Of course, I chose to watch The Princess Bride. 🙂
