While in New York, I was given a challenge. 18 other bloggers and I were asked to join in a friendly competition to create a Spider-Man DIY superhero outfit. Whoever came up with the most creative outfit would win a signed poster and a massage gift card. Since the challenge was part of a promotion between Goodwill and Spider-Man: Homecoming, there was a catch.

Each of us were given a $25 gift card and told to shop for 15 minutes in a New York City Goodwill. We could complete the outfit with what we had at home but the main clothing pieces had to come from Goodwill. To qualify, we couldn’t exceed the gift card amount or the time limit. Oh my goodness was it stressful!

When our public relations representative said, “Go!” several of the gals dashed off without hesitation. Everything red or blue was gone in seconds! As I listened to the fashion gears of the other bloggers churning, I mentally shut down. I already hate shopping. But, to have to shop in such a short time and with experienced and creative shoppers buzzing around me, it was too much!

I ended up with just one shirt and one sweater, only using half of my allotted gift card amount. I was happy that it was more than nothing and made my personal peace with making do with what I had. Later on, while I was re-packing my bag in the hotel lobby, one lady asked me if I had some clothes for the Spider-Man figurine I was stuffing into my suitcase. It took me a good few minutes to realize that she was talking about the red and blue fabrics poking out from my Goodwill bag. Well, at least I got the colors right!

That was almost two weeks ago and the deadline for our Spider-Man DIY superhero outfit is today. I am happy to announce that I was able to come up with something! I am by no means a crafty person but I don’t think it turned out bad at all. Maybe it will be good enough for an honorable mention. 🙂

The full outfit was super inexpensive to put together.

The Spider-Man Sight Mask was part of the swag given out at the press conference. Jeans, necklace, and shoes were from my closet.

Here are more photos from our mini photo shoot in the parking lot near us (click to see them full-size). It was a family affair with Frans taking photos and Munchkin helping with my hair, outfit, and posing. More outfit details and printable spider template are below.

For the shirt, I used “slick” and “puffy” type fabric paints but I think they look the same. The “slick” was used on the web while the “puffy” one was used on the spider logo. This was all done freehand. I used a pencil (the kind you sharpen, not a mechanical one) to lightly sketch out the lines. For the spider logo, I started with a long octagon, added a head rounded at the top, and then did the legs.

For the spider logo on the sweater, I made a template and cut the shape out of red felt. Then I used black thread to stitch a rough outline of the inner octagon. To attach the spider, I used red thread to attach the edges. I was too nervous to use tacky glue (though I bought it) since I was afraid I’d mess up or put the logo on all crooked. In case you’d like to use the template I made, spider-man-spider-back.

I’m not sure how the challenge will turn out but at least I impressed my daughter with my squeezy paint bottle and stitching skills.

Check out my other Spidey coverage here:

Spider-Man: Homecoming & Goodwill Challenge
