The time I have been waiting for has finally come! My second favorite Marvel film franchise, Black Panther, is now available to own on Digital, Blu-Ray, and 4K! (Only second to Ant-Man and with Captain America coming third.) Now, I have to admit that I was hesitant to see the film when it first came out in theaters back in February. In fact, if it wasn’t for my husband and daughter, I might have waited for the home release to even give it a chance. So why the seemingly sudden 180-degree turnaround?

I really enjoyed Black Panther in Captain America: Civil War and was looking forward the talented (mostly) black cast. It makes sense that would be the case since the movie is set in Wakanda but, yeah, you know Hollywood. However, there was something about how the film was portrayed in the synopsis and trailers that just didn’t appeal to me. There didn’t seem to be much of a plot except for the standard warring over the throne. And, I was concerned that it would be so culturally inclusive that my family and I would be lost. It turns out that I couldn’t have been more wrong.

Marvel Studios’ “Black Panther” follows T’Challa who, after the death of his father, the King of Wakanda, returns home to the isolated, technologically advanced African nation to succeed to the throne and take his rightful place as king. But when a powerful old enemy reappears, T’Challa’s mettle as king—and Black Panther—is tested when he is drawn into a formidable conflict that puts the fate of Wakanda and the entire world at risk. Faced with treachery and danger, the young king must rally his allies and release the full power of Black Panther to defeat his foes and secure the safety of his people and their way of life.

Marvel Studios’ Black Panther Movie Review

This movie has a solid storyline full of depth, emotion, wit, action, and charm. The actors were wonderful, the graphics and effects were jaw-dropping, and the way Wakanda and its people were presented just felt so right. (Only the accents were kind of “off” sometimes.) It’s great for all ages (except maybe the very little ones due to intense, dark scenes), all movie fans (even if you’re not into superhero-type films), and all backgrounds (the Korean representation was right on too). Black Panther for everyone.

I loved how traditional African culture and modern technology were seamlessly weaved together. You could tell how much detail and care went into the narratives, costumes, character interactions, customs, and even CGI cityscapes with thatch roofs accenting uber-tech architecture. The African-American culture was touched on as well. I thought filmmakers did a decent job at showing how different it is but, at the same time, just as rich and complex. Oh, and can we talk about the FIERCE women in this film?!!!
