I completely missed the boat regarding Club Penguin up to this point. We never had our daughter play online and, while the first Nintendo DS game looked interesting, I really didn’t know enough about it to validate a purchase. So our first experience with these flightless spies is the DS sequel, Club Penguin: Herbert’s Revenge.

In Herbert’s Revenge, you can engage in ten different missions. Much of the play area is clickable, providing much entertainment as items move in a fun way or initiate a silly reaction from a nearby character. Quite a bit of reading is involved so be sure you are nearby or your child is a good reader. The introductory section is clear enough if you are not familiar with Club Penguin gameplay already.

An elite group of secret agent penguins is on the case to explain the unusual happenings on their iceburg. This provides a wonderful basis for great spy action including gadgets, missions, disguises, and more. What I was glad to NOT find was violence. Yes, this game proved that you can have a great game without that. In fact, the ‘bad guy’ isn’t even all that bad, just a bit off-track.

""""

As the group leader, you work with a few other ‘agents’ to find and make sense of various clues. There are periodic prompts as to what you need to do but the player is required to figure most things out. Sometimes this got frustrating for me but my daughter loved it. Instead of getting upset when the answer was not immediately clear, she just searched a little more and experimented with other possible solutions. I felt that the missions and the steps to solve them were very clever.

""""

The penguins can also utilize the help of eight different puffles. Puffles are those puffballs with eyes that are pictured above. By the end of the game, my daughter knew the name of each puffle and what they did. She had to help me a bit when it was my turn.

It only took about 4-5 hours for my daughter to finish the missions (not all at one sitting). I was concerned that the play life was short-lived. That was not the case though. I asked her if it was still fun even though she already knew how to solve the missions. She said, “It’s fun because I know how to solve them.” Kids, go figure . . .

This is a cute game that is both entertaining and engaging. Too bad only one player’s game can be saved at a time.
