""Flip Video has certainly made its brand a household name in the audio/visual world. With each new generation of their trademark video cameras, they continue to raise the standard in quality products. But can this little thing really hold its own against standard cameras or mobile phones with video capabilities? Is it really that special? I was anxious to find out.

""The first thing I noticed was the packaging. Usually this doesn’t really matter but I was very impressed when I opened the box. Inside you will find another box, similar to what you would find at a jewelry store. This makes the Flip a perfect gift with excellent presentation. Beneath the video camera, a wrist strap and soft protective case are also included. No assembly is necessary as you can immediately start using it.

The MinoHD is extremely easy to use. Just push the big, red button in the middle to begin recording and to end it as well. The function keys are touch-sensitive and very responsive. On the other side, a red light illuminates clearly so the subject being recorded knows exactly when the session begins and ends. The video screen is a little small but is large enough to know whether or not you got the footage you wanted.

Because you can only see so much on the small display, I was shocked at the quality of the video when we plugged it into our television. The video is detailed and sharp, the colors vivid and true, and the sound is crisp and clear. The Flip proves that you can only get this kind of quality with a dedicated video camera. The 720p HD and 60 fps (frames per second) create a surprisingly good video despite the physical size of its compact casing.

Want to see for yourself? Check out the video I recorded. Notice the clarity and colors, despite the low light (it was dusk) and movement. If you want to check out the HD in full-size, click it to watch on my YouTube page.

Compared to the older version, this new generation of Flip MinoHD shines. The matte finish cuts down on fingerprints while the controls are more responsive. I also like the way this USB connector flips out much better. The older one had an extra piece that was cumbersome and kind of useless.

The compact size of the MinoHD makes it very portable. You don’t need to edit the video for playback on your computer or television, unless you so desire. Just plug in the USB or attach an HDMI cable and enjoy your recording.

For quick little videos I will continue to use my iPhone. But for vlogging and to record special travels and events, we will definitely keep our Flip handy.
