2014 Fiat 500L Review + Fiat 500 Pop Comparison

2014 Fiat 500L Review - Family 4-door hatchback #Cars #Carshopping

Out of all the cars I’ve reviewed thus far, I heard the most “I want that!” exclamations and ride requests from friends for the 2014 Fiat 500L 4-door hatchback. The unique and playful lines definitely make it appealing to both sexes – women think it’s cute and men just want to take it to the beach and chill. Plus, it’s so crazy roomy inside despite it’s misleading exterior.

2014 Fiat 500L Review – Getting to Know It Inside and Out

In the 2014 Fiat 500L, doors open wide, there’s plenty of leg room and head room, the panoramic sunroof extends all the way with a mesh screen cover, fabric is easy to clean, there’s a 3-prong outlet, and the Beats audio system plays crystal clear music with good bass depth. To the sides of the headlights, the 500L also had these Bi-Function Halogen Projector Headlamps that basically lit up the corners as you turned – very cool and helpful. Frans thought the placement of the backup camera in one of the 0’s of the 500L was quite clever.

Both front bucket seats allowed you to adjust the seat height to accommodate for all sizes of drivers. The back seats are positioned high so even those with long legs had plenty of space. The second row could also slide forward to create more room in the cargo area. Speaking of which, this had a good amount of space for whatever you need to throw back there. The cargo area was about the size of Speckles crate so she was able to snugly enjoy the back after our excursion to one of our favorite beaches. There’s also a little ledge near each door, making it easy to wipe the dirt off our sandy feet.

2014 Fiat 500L Review – Visibility and Power

One feature that I just couldn’t get over was the amazing driving visibility in the 500L The windows curved all the way around the car, allowing you to see everything around you. It gave the same open feeling of standing in a room with floor-to-ceiling windows. I loved it!

The power was sufficient but I found it to be just a bit lacking. Transition between gears wasn’t too smooth but at least the ride was quiet. Handling was very light and sometimes I did feel a bit top heavy on corners. Overall, though, it was enjoyable and easy to drive the 500L. Plus, all the seats were really comfortable.

Fiat 500 Pop VS Fiat 500L

Before I received the Fiat 500L to test drive, I had the 2014 Fiat 500 Pop. These two cars couldn’t be more different! The Fiat Pop felt like a toy city car where as the Fiat 500L was a legit hatchback sedan that holds its own on the road. The layout of the 500L is much easier to adapt to as well, though the aesthetic look of the Pop was very refreshing. Just note that the Pop is pretty much the epitome of cute and some guys will refuse to even sit in it.

With a base price for the Trekking model of $21,395, I think this is a very decent car for the price. While the ride didn’t ‘wow’ me, the look and feel did. Plus, the sheer amount of visibility made it so easy to drive with confidence. I think this is a great family car that’s stylish, simple, and functional. And, yes, it’s just fun to zip around in this. Just watch out for those seatbelt buckles in the back seat – those do NOT feel nice to accidentally sit on.

If you have time, I’d highly recommend you see the 2014 Fiat 500L in person and give it a spin to see if it’s right for you. You just might be surprised just like I was!

My daughter has been looking into getting a Fiat when her car finally dies. I personally like the 500L better than the Pop, I hope she chooses that one!

It’s so much more spacious than it looks. Comfortable for backseat passengers.

I would love the open windows like that too. And you’re right, it does seem like it would be small inside. What a great surprise to see that it’s very roomy. I would be interested in test driving one of these!

Alesha @ Full Time Mama June 25, 2014 - 9:37 pm

My husband is about ready to start seriously looking for a new work car. With a family of 6 there’s nothing he can get that’s a good work car (good gas mileage, long lasting engine, etc) that fits us all, but he DOES want to get the best bang for his buck. Plus the car he gets will likely be the kids’ car in a few years when they start driving (ACK!) so we want to get a good one. I’ll have to let him know about this vehicle and have him take a look.

TerriAnn van Gosliga June 25, 2014 - 10:33 pm

I have reviews up for over 25 cars so maybe you’ll be able to find one among those 🙂

Bobbie June 26, 2014 - 9:25 am

I think these cars are too cute. I think it would be an okay option for me now that the kids are older and we don’t need car seats. I love the color too!

Anne - Mommy Has to Work June 26, 2014 - 11:40 am

Although this car isn’t my style, but it sounds like a really nice and comfortable ride!

Tammy Litke (@threedifferent) June 30, 2014 - 6:15 pm

That is so very cute – and that visibility is incredible. It does look like it would be small on the inside, but it’s kind of like the Tardis right?! Bigger on the inside 🙂
