An Unpleasant Notice & San Mateo Rental Classified Ad

by TerriAnn

This is what my day looked like last Thursday…

Yep, I was just going about my regular business when my landlord dropped a letter in my mailbox. I figured it was just a renewal of our contract or maybe that they were raising the rent. No, what was inside was a notice of (no-fault) eviction and that we had to move out within 30 days. Apparently one of the owners needs to move in which means we had to be out. AAAAHHHHHH!!!!!!

What a shock! After living here for almost five years and felt somewhat settled, we had even asked our landlord if we could have a dog and they said, “Sure!” So now we have to look for a new place to live with rents going for 25% higher then they used to and one that will accept a short, chubby 60-lb dog. Let’s just say that the blog will not be updated much this month.

If you know of a 2-bedroom place in the San Mateo area for less than $2100 and that will accept a dog, PLEASE let me know! Any re-tweets or shared would also be appreciated. Thank you.

Sincerely,
TerriAnn (of Cookies & Clogs)

What a horrible time of year to have this happen! I hope you find something really soon!

Thank you so much! I’ve been refreshing the rental ad page on craigslist every 5 minutes or so 😛

Oh my gosh, that was my worst nightmare for my grandparents who lived in the same apartment for 45 years. Every time the property changed owners, I would fret…and there was an issue, right before they both passed, but the new owners were kind enough to let them stay…though they had to move to another unit during a remodel, and stay for the same amount of rent. It was such a huge relief to me at the time. I’m so, so sorry you got this news right now, it’s just crappy. Thank goodness there are so many other great things that go on this time of year (just the ‘feel’ of happy in the air, for starters)…maybe it will help some. *Big Hugs* from one of your readers.

Thank you for sharing that. We’re trying not to be anxious and realize that many others have had similar experiences. We still have some time so we are just going to pack and try to keep positive!

This is horrible! You should have had at least a 90 day notice, and even then I’d be shocked! Don’t worry too much about the blog—we will be here when you get settled. For the record–I think your landlord is a…..never mind, just do what you need to do.

Well, let’s just say that this notice was not out of character from our landlord. Still, we really like the place we are in now so it will be a challenge to find something similar. Legally, CA does have a law that we are entitled up to 60 days so if we can’t find anything right away we still have a time buffer.

That is really a bummer Terri. I hope you find a place soon. Too bad you didn’t live more close to Sacramento where I am as the rent prices are so much affordable.

Thanks, Stefani! I know, prices here are nuts as a normal 2-br house or duplex runs about $2500/mo. If we really, can’t find anything we’ll have to look in the East Bay so my DH can still commute to work.

Don’t fret, TeriAnn, somehow something will come thru – sending prayers and hugs for you in this unsettling time. And, don’t forget to haggle for your next rental, especially at this time. I will certainly share this all around and hopefully something will come thru for you and family. Keeping fingers crossed for you!! <3

I really appreciate that Lynda. Unfortunately, many have lost their homes locally and are now renting. Plus, San Mateo County has no rent control so it’s crazy out here. If anything else, we have family we can stay with to buy time and then there’s the option of moving out of or to another part of the area.

Thanks! Fortunately we just signed our lease agreement yesterday on a new place 🙂

Thank you. We also look forward to the benefits we are gaining in moving. Last night was the first that we slept in our new place and it was so nice 🙂
