ConAgra Foods & Chris O’Donnell For Domestic Hunger-Free Summer, Partnered Post…

Hunger-Free Summer Campaign with ConAgra and Chris O'DonnellTrips to the beach, dips in the pool, smoking barbecues, melting popsicles that drip down stick hands, and more are in full swing this summer. Each day, my daughter wonders what fun thing we’ll do together next. For many other children across the nation, something else preoccupies their thoughts – hunger.

In my state alone, which has some very affluent areas, 2,453,770 children face hunger. Across the U.S. 1 in 5 children are at risk. 1 in 5! That’s a staggering statistic which shows the severity of the problem and that an equivalent of 1/5 of your child’s classmates not knowing where their next meal would come from. What would it be like to be the ‘1’?

The concept can be a difficult one for children to grasp. After all, when you say that ‘they shouldn’t waste their food when other children are going hungry’ it likely won’t mean much to them. In the case of my daughter, we did something a little different. We asked her to imagine the worst hunger that she had ever experienced and then told her to times that by a hundred. That really hit home just how horrible it could be for some less fortunate kids that may even be younger than her.

Earlier in the month I shared the Hunger-Free Summer campaign which was designed to help domestic hunger. For each full view of the video featuring spokesperson Chris O’Donnell, one meal would be donated. If you haven’t seen it yet or want to help donate a meal, here it is:

Watching the above video is only one step you can take to actively fight domestic hunger. You can also download the handbook, Beyond the Food Drive: Ending Hunger through Citizen Service (PDF), to find out ways you can help in your own community. Some suggestions include assisting with summer meals programs, participating in a community garden, or even coordinating “Hunger” activities for fun awareness. Buying your usual groceries might lend some support as well.

Several ConAgra food brands are printing special codes on their product. From now until August 31st, locate a code and enter it to donate yet another meal. Each code provides one meal donation – up to five codes per person/computer. That could help support a lot of meals for children that really need it!

So, between all your summertime adventures, take some time out to fight domestic hunger and help make this a Hunger-Free Summer for millions of children!

I can’t even imagine how a parent must feel to know their child is hungry and not be able to do anything about it. I really just cannot imagine it. This is a good cause, to share, and I like that there are ways offered for everyone to get involved.
