Woes of Buying A New Mattress & Slight Oversight

Replace Bad Mattress Planning

What Not To Do When You Need To Buy A New Mattress…

Note to self: If hubby is fed up with your old mattress and wants to replace it, make sure a new one is on the way before getting rid of your current one. This is our set-up for the next six days/night until our new mattress arrives (the shipping is slow for some reason). Uhm, yeah, some lack of planning was involved 😛

Replace Bad Mattress Planning Replace Bad Mattress Planning

Sad thing? We’re actually having less pain sleeping on the air bed – our 1-year-old mattress was that bad! Fortunately, we got it from Costco which meant we could return it for a full refund. I love Costco! So the Novafoam went back and a Serta Perfect Sleeper is on the way. According to reviews, this firm pillowtop seems like it will work out best for us. I hope that’s true.

We’ve always been a bit stingy in the mattresses we’ve bought (well, we just couldn’t afford more at those times), which is why they all needed replacing. We’ve dealt with neck and back pain for many, many years. It’s been especially apparent since we’ve been staying in more hotels recently and ALWAYS sleep better there than at home. We hope this one works out for at least a decade!

Buying a good mattress is awesome. We always look forward to coming home from trips where we’ve slept in guest beds and even many hotels because we like our mattress that much.
Enjoy getting up without soreness!! (well, when your bed arrives 🙂 )

love your frame, by the way

TerriAnn van Gosliga May 2, 2013 - 10:24 am

Wow, I hope we have the same experience as you! Oh, and the frame is actually Ikea 🙂 Thanks!

Viv May 2, 2013 - 12:11 pm

Wow! It looks very stylish. I would not have guessed Ikea

Oh gosh! I hope you get a good nights rest with the new mattress. And at least the air mattress isn’t that bad. How awesome of Costco too with being able to return it!

I hate buying mattresses since my husband and I like different firmnesses (is that a word?). We have pretty much gone the cheap route and should not have. Those are one of those “things” that you “get what you pay for.”

we ended up getting a sleep number to try to solve our mattress problems.

HilLesha @To the Motherhood May 2, 2013 - 2:17 pm

I’m in dire need of a new mattress. Would love to buy a Sleep Number someday!

Mellisa May 2, 2013 - 2:37 pm

Yes! Our mattress is awful, we are in desperate need to get a new one.

Ty @ Mama of 3 Munchkins May 2, 2013 - 7:27 pm

My mattress is horrendous, I would love to get a new one soon!

Shell Feis May 3, 2013 - 1:11 am

Aww bummer! I hope it gets there soon. We have a decent mattress but it’s getting old & worn out. My husband wants to buy the one from the hotel we stayed at last month because he slept THAT good. It was also our wedding night, so it may have been from the champagne. lol

I hope this one works for you!

We’ve had our mattress for over a decade now and it’s beginning to be uncomfortable, and we were just talking about beginning to shop for something new.

Tricia Nightowlmama May 3, 2013 - 9:04 am

most defiantly. I can’t tell you how long it took me to select a great mattress but we now have a sleep number all all our issues with hardness and softness are cured .

I bet your going to love a new bed I can’t wait to hear all about it

Colleen May 3, 2013 - 11:20 am

Yes definitely make sure the new one is scheduled. Hope the new one is better then the old one.

We are beginning our hunt for a new mattress soon. It’s absolutely time to make the splurge but deciding what type to buy is a bit difficult. We need to invest an afternoon in visiting stores, lying down and trying them out. Then later I’ll compare prices on our top choices!

That’s cool you can return it! We bought a latex bed 3 years ago and it is awesome. It should last us 20 years.

Penelope (NYC Blogger) May 3, 2013 - 2:56 pm

I lucked out and got a great mattress, but they can be hard to shop for.

Angela@AboutAMom May 3, 2013 - 5:01 pm

I am so glad I read this. I have a new mattress coming and will be sure I hold onto the old one until after the new one has arrived.

courtney May 3, 2013 - 6:16 pm

Our mattress is horrible.. I’m hoping we can hold off until we buy a house though.

Lisa May 3, 2013 - 8:42 pm

We need to get a new mattress.

Leilani May 3, 2013 - 10:13 pm

Last year we decided to buy an actual bed frame for our mattress that had been lying on our bedroom floor for over a year. Our ding dong brains didn’t realize we owned a Cal King mattress and purchased a King-sized bed frame from IKEA. So we put together the bed, put the mattress on top and then started kicking ourselves in the arse. So, since we didn’t want to go through the hassle of disassembling the bed and returning it, we decided to invest in a brand new mattress instead, which wasn’t cheap.

My guest room has a costco mattress that my husband and i slept in for years, but we just bought the sleep number bed and it is 100% better. The first month was crazy because it was hard to even get out of bed. Now, when we go to hotels we miss our bed.

Stefani May 4, 2013 - 11:00 pm

We bought a nice pillowtop mattress about 10 years ago. I think we are due for a new one!

Jennifer @TheRebelChick May 5, 2013 - 2:12 pm

We bought a new mattress about 4 years ago when Macy’s was having an insane Memorial Day sale – we got a $2000 mattress for $500!! We didn’t realize until we bought that mattress how bad our old one was, my husband had it for about 10 years before we got married…it was over 15 years old when we replaced it. A good mattress can make such a difference in your sleep!

Jennifer May 5, 2013 - 2:28 pm

My husband and I purchased our first real bed in 1996, after using an old futon. Ugh. We purchased the bowling ball mattress and it served us well until this December, when we finally got our new king bed out of storage (in another state) which included our new king mattress. Now, I love my bed and never want to get out of it!

Kathleen May 5, 2013 - 7:25 pm

LOL I am sorry to laugh, but it sounds like something I would do. Our new mattress should be here in a few weeks and I don’t plan on letting my current mattress go anywhere until it gets here.

Theresa May 5, 2013 - 7:28 pm

Ugh. Mattress shopping.

Elaina- @atimeout4mommy May 5, 2013 - 7:51 pm

I HATE our mattress! My hubby picked it out and it was the worst decision ever!

Sheilacakes May 5, 2013 - 8:42 pm

I was sleeping on a really nice air mattress for a few months, it was older, and it randomly popped a couple days before Christmas.

Robin {Mom Foodie} May 5, 2013 - 8:47 pm

Yes, mine isn’t very old, but I bought it from a cheapo place and it is dreadful.

Emily @FamilyNLifeLV May 5, 2013 - 11:17 pm

I love costco too! So glad you got to return it!

Adrienn May 7, 2013 - 6:31 am

Right now…as I type this…we are researching mattresses and will buy one before weeks end. I hate my bed. Everyday. Every night. Every morning. It is a hand-me-down that I’ve had for 10 years and it sucks. My back hurts everyday. I would rather sleep in my recliner than go to bed. I can hardly wait for a new one.

Anne - Mommy Has to Work May 8, 2013 - 2:29 pm

We had a water bed, then got a regular bed, then went back to a pillow top water bed…ughh.

Tammy May 8, 2013 - 4:28 pm

We sucked it up and bought a Tempurpedic last year. Best decision ever. We sleep great and there is no more pain.

Toni May 12, 2013 - 4:02 pm

Yes we need a sleep number something fierce. I need super fluffy cloud like mattresses, hubby needs more firm. BTW it was SO GREAT meeting you and getting to chat this weekend.
